Our intrepid founder, Prue, embarked on an extraordinary caffeine and culture journey that took her across continents and through diverse lands. From the vibrant streets of Vietnam to the mesmerizing landscapes of South Africa, and the ancient tea ceremonies of Japan to the bustling coffee markets of Indonesia and Malaysia, their quest for caffeine enlightenment knew no bounds.
Vietnam’s Bold Brews: In Vietnam, Prue found herself surrounded by the intoxicating aroma of robust Vietnamese coffee. Exploring Ho Chi Minh City’s narrow alleys and stunning French architecture, she savored the famous egg coffee, a delightful local concoction that blends strong coffee with sweetened egg yolk, a true Vietnamese treasure. She also discovered the process of brewing traditional drip coffee for Iced coffee called Cà Phê Sữa Đá, which encapsulates the essence of Vietnamese coffee culture.
China’s Timeless Tea Traditions: In China, Prue was transported through time as she explored age-old tea ceremonies in Beijing and immersed herself in the Gongfu Cha tradition, experiencing the harmony of ancient practices amidst modern city life. In Shaanxi province, she savored fragrant teas like Bai Hao Yin Zhen (Silver Needle) and Liu Bao, delving into the rich heritage of Shaanxi’s tea-making legacy. The tea experience in both Beijing and Shaanxi revealed a timeless tradition that unites people in a shared love for this revered brew, shaping Chinese culture and society.
Japan’s Serene Matcha Moments: Immersing themselves in the serene world of Japan, Prue experienced the elegant grace of matcha tea ceremonies. In Kyoto’s tranquil temples, they observed the intricate choreography of matcha preparation, appreciating the mindful connection between host and guest that this ceremonial beverage symbolizes. The vibrant green tea powder infused their senses with calm and focus. While in Kyoto Prue lived in a hundreds of years old Japanese home with a Japanese family. On icy cold winter mornings, she would be awoken by the smell of Genmaicha (玄米茶, “brown rice tea“), which is a Japanese brown rice green tea consisting of green tea mixed with roasted popped brown rice.
Indonesia and Malaysia’s Coffee Adventure: Continuing her odyssey, Prue journeyed to the enchanting islands of Indonesia and Malaysia, where coffee was prominent in daily life. She spent 5 years living in Indonesia exploring different islands and coffee and tea traditions. In the bustling coffee markets of Jakarta, she marveled at the mastery of local coffee artisans, brewing sumptuous cups of kopi tubruk and kopi tarik. She lived on Java island for three years, home to the world famous Java coffee, and sipped the rich, thick dark coffee served in a glass on a saucer in local homes. While exploring Indonesia’s coffee scene, she also encountered the rare and intriguing Kopi Luwak, known as the world’s most expensive coffee, which is produced from coffee beans that have been ingested and excreted by civet cats.
Moving on to Malaysia, where Prue lived for 3 years. Coffee and tea culture in Malaysia has been shaped by multicultural influences, mainly from China, Indian, and of course ethnic Malay. In bustling kopitiams, they relished the bold and aromatic kopi-o, a strong black coffee that reflects the region’s rich history. The coffee culture in both Indonesia and Malaysia unveiled a captivating tapestry of flavors and traditions, showcasing the diverse and profound relationship between coffee and the people of Southeast Asia.
South Africa’s rich coffee culture: South Africa’s burgeoning coffee culture is alive and thriving. While historically, tea had been the preferred beverage, the rise of specialty coffee was evident in the urban centers and beyond. Johannesburg’s coffee landscape captivated Prue. Here, she found a fast-paced coffee culture, with espresso bars and artisanal cafes catering to the city’s energetic vibe. She was intrigued by the creativity of local roasters, who blended African beans with global influences, resulting in innovative and flavorful coffee profiles.
